WP 7: Socio-economic determinants of food choices

This work package will identify the main socio-economic determinants of food choices among the elderly within the EU, and determine the most significant barriers to the improvement of dietary quality within that population. In particular, the specific objectives will be:

  • To investigate the heterogeneity of food preferences within the elderly population and quantify the relative influence of economic factors (food prices, income), health status, and household characteristics (structure, education) on dietary choices in order to provide an evidence base for targeting nutritional health policies and develop functional foods for the elderly consumers
  • To identify and apply the best practices to inform elderly consumers of the nutritional benefits of particular foods
